Obituary of Herbert G. Boettger

Herbert G. Boettger, Sr. formerly of Spring City, PA passed away on June 19, 2014 in Reading, PA, where he resided for the past 4 1/2 years. He was 91. Born on September 12, 1922, Herbert was the son of Harry O. and Anna M. (Gehris) Boettger. He grew up in Spring City, PA.
After graduation from Spring City High School in 1940, he served in the United States Army in Anniston, Alabama. Herbert and Ruth E. (Pifer), of Royersford, PA were married on September 19, 1940. His wife predeceased him in 2002. Herbert is survived by his three children, Herbert G. Jr., Stephen J. and his wife Etta (Schultz) of Boyertown, PA, and Mary A. (wife of Gary Hess), Wyomissing, PA. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Rodney C. Boettger, Boyertown, PA and Natalie J. Boettger, New Holland, PA, four great grandchildren, Courtney (wife of Will Haley), Greensboro, NC, Hannah Boettger, Philadelphia, PA, and Ian Boettger, Greensboro, NC, and Zachary Hensel, New Holland, PA, as well as one great-great granddaughter, Vyvyann Haley, Greensboro, NC.
Herbert began his career as a truck driver and later was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Pottstown, PA, and Ecolaire, Exton, PA as a draftsman. He later retired from Spring Ford School District, Oaks Elementary School, as a custodial supervisor. Herbert enjoyed serving as an assistant scout master for Spring City Explorer Post #69 and traveled with them all over the US , Canada and Mexico.
He also enjoyed family vacations to Canada, New England, the South, and Stone Harbor, NJ. He enjoyed playing the saxophone in the dance band as a student at Spring City High School, and later in life, enjoyed playing the Hawaiin guitar. Herbert also enjoyed gardening with the wife. Herbert was a member of the American Legion Post #602, Thomas W. O'Connor Post Home, Inc. Spring City, PA for 69 years. Herbert was formerly a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Spring City, PA, and Spring City United Church of Christ.
Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral service at The Shalkop Grace & Strunk Funeral Home, 135 Bridge St. Spring City, PA 19475 on Tuesday, June 24 at 11:00 AM., with The Reverend Erick Kern, Jr. officiating.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
