I knew Bill from being part of the Birch House family we shared in the early 80s when our paths crossed. I truly admired the way Bill went about his business - whether that was his academic focus...making contributions to one of our IM Champ team sporting events - speaking passionately about the things he valued most - or just sharing a moment of silliness that always brought a smile to everyone around him. Some people exude goodness from the moment you meet them. Bill was one of those people.
Our 2016 reunion was the only time since the early 80's that I saw Bill. However, I called him a few times over the past few months to wish him well in his battle - and to let him know he was in my thoughts and prayers. He seemed to be in a good place emotionally - and spiritually. I found that both comforting and inspiring.
We're all better people for having known Bill.

This photograph is one I keep in my Living room. One day, of many, of roller coasters at Hershey Park with Bill. That’s his look of a great time on rides he loved. Hmmm, I’m sure that’s what he looked like under those skydiving goggles, too.
God will have to “stay on his toes” with Bill around. We were blessed to share time with Bill.
With thanks for that time, and heartfelt sympathy for his family’s loss.
Sincerely,
Bruce Young

I met and worked with Bill at Northrop Grumman. Although we did not work at the same location, I got to know Bill via emails and conference calls. He was always curious, helpful, and dependable. His sense of humor worked well with mine and that made any conversation easy.
I talked with him on the phone the Friday before he passed. I believe his sister, Susan, was visiting and he said he was having a great day. I am glad we had that good, last conversation. I will miss you Bill and will think of you with a smile.

I knew Bill from my barber shop. We enjoyed talking politics and would exercise walking on the trail or walking around
Spring City. We did a small hike at Monacacy trail, that was fun.He taught me how to read the map for elevation and colored markings for that trail. Will be missed.
God Bless.

Rest in Peace, Bill. I was one of Bill's Birch House family at Penn State. Bill was always such a positive, gentle person who always made people feel comfortable. Once you met Bill, you felt like you were a life-long friend. He made an impact on this world. He will be missed. But we know God has you - Dean Longo

Bill's body may have failed him too soon, but his soul never did. He was a kind and gentle person that I was blessed to call a friend. I knew Bill from Birch House at Penn State and shared a house in MD with him several years later. We shared interesting discussions and many laughs together. As I spoke with him during his illness, I was impressed with how grounded Bill remained. He was hopeful, but not naively so. Like most things in his life, his hope was rooted in both science and faith. The grace with which he faced his disease was inspiring. Skydiving wasn't the only way he exhibited courage.

I was Bill's room mate for three years at Penn State. What great times he and I shared together! I would like to share with you a few of the high adventure moments that Bill and I experienced. Let's see, there was the time that I came back to our room very late one night. The room was dark and Bill was asleep. And then...ok that's not appropriate for here. I know, there was the time when he and I went out to a party in downtown State College after some particularly difficult exams. Bill thought that it would be a good idea to...never mind. Trust me, we forged some very strong bonds when we were all part of Birch House. Bill and I had a great deal of fun together and I remember those times with a big smile on my face. I don't think that I'll ever be able to have similar adventures with anyone else on the planet ever again. Bill was unique. Like everyone else, I will miss him. Tom Hymer

I was saddened to learn of Bill's passing. What a kind and quiet man he was and a hidden sense of humor that would pop out when least expected.
I am so glad that I had gotten to know him and to enjoy his organ playing after Church. I often kidded him that he was giving me a mini concert while I sat in the back listening to him play such wonderful tunes after the Church service was over.
Bill will certainly be missed by me and all who knew him.
Sincerely, Sue Graham

I am very sorry for your loss and sorry to lose a friend I have known since he early 80's. I knew Bill from Penn State. We lived in a small section of Hamilton Dormitory called Birch House. We all felt united in our small section of the world at that time and that were all part of something together. Birch House was the 1981-1982 Intramural Champions, a title earned by winning a diverse series of contests from racquet ball to basketball over several months. The photos attached are of the Birch House reunion in July of 2016 at Penn State. Bill is seen proudly wearing his IM Champion shirt one of only 2 known to still exist. I will miss him but will always be grateful for his friendship and the time we spent and the memories we made.

Deanne and I are very saddened by Bill’s passing. We will remember Bill as a kind and gentle soul (and a sharp-witted adventurer – skydiving, wow!), with deep convictions and unwavering faith. Bill was a selfless man – asking for nothing more than prayers in recent years. May God rest his soul and comfort Bill’s family and all his loved ones … – Jim Hurley (PSU – Birch House)
