Obituary of Matilda M. Diemer
Please share a memory of Matilda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Matilda was born in Sumter, South Carolina to Robert Fletcher McLellan and Louise Mai Gregorie. She grew up in Sumter, attended Sumter High School where she played varsity field hockey and basketball, and was a 1942 honor graduate and commencement speaker. She met her future husband, Russell B. Diemer of Spring City, PA, at a USO dance at nearby Shaw Air Field where he was stationed prior to his being posted overseas. She received her BS degree in Chemistry from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC in 1945 where she graduated magna cum laude, and then moved north, working for Standard Oil Development in Linden, NJ until her 1947 marriage to Russell, and then at National Sugar Refining in Philadelphia until birth of their first child in 1952. She and Russell were married for 50 years, raising their family in Spring City. She then moved to Kenilworth, PA where she has lived the last eleven years.
In addition to her early career as a chemist, she took courses at Ursinus College toward her education certification and briefly taught high school and junior high school science in the Phoenixville and Spring-Ford school systems in the early 1960's.
Then, during the 1980's she served as Librarian for the Spring City Free Public Library.
Matilda was heavily involved in Spring City United Methodist Church, teaching both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for over 20 years. She served on numerous committees including chairing the Administrative Board under three different pastors. She also was president of the United Methodist Women in the 1990's as well as holding other offices in that organization. Once her teaching days were past, she enjoyed membership in several study groups at the church.
Matilda dedicated nearly 40 years of her life to the "Meals on Wheels" organization. Her involvement began at the origination of a chapter in the Spring-Ford area in 1972 and when a Spring City chapter separated from Royersford, she served terms as its Treasurer and Chair. She continued to coordinate deliveries in the Spring City area up until she moved into Manatawny Manor in 2010.
Her spirit of volunteerism extended into other areas as well. She served terms as president of both Spring City Elementary and Spring-Ford Junior High School Home & School Leagues. During her Spring City Elementary tenure, both Spring City and Royersford organizations joined together to promote adding elementary school classrooms to improve the educational experience at both schools. She was active in scouting serving the Cub Scouts as Den Mother and Webelos Co-Leader, and leading a Junior Girl Scouts Troop. She also acted as consultant to the Valley Forge Council of the Girl Scouts of America.
She served two terms as president of the Spring City Women's Library Club and was an Art-Goes-To-School volunteer for 10 years.
Matilda was predeceased by her husband Russell and is survived by her three children and their spouses, Bert and Betsy Diemer of Wilmington, DE, Carey and Barry Kendall of Lebanon, PA and Rob and Helen Diemer of Cherry Hill, NJ, as well as by her grandchildren and their spouses (Amanda and Don Moyer, Russell and Lis Diemer, Scott Kendall, David and Christy Kendall, Erin Kendall, Claire Diemer and Andrew Diemer).
